Why We Named Them Old Glory

Why We Named Them Old Glory

There’s a certain feeling in summer that only shows up in July.

It’s in the way flags hang from porches and storefronts, gently moving in the breeze. In the red, navy blue, and baby blue bunting draped along railings and fences. In paper decorations taped to windows and the quiet hum of anticipation that builds as the Fourth gets closer.

That feeling is where Old Glory comes from.

The colors of these earrings are pulled straight from those memories. Red for the bold stripes of the flag, vibrant and proud. Navy blue for the deep night sky just before the fireworks begin. Baby blue for the long summer days that stretch out ahead of you, bright and full of possibility.

The buoy shape grounds the design in the coastal world, where patriotism often feels woven into everyday life. Buoys bob offshore in red and blue, boats fly flags from their sterns, and harbors glow with reflected light once the fireworks start. They stand steady in the water, much like the traditions that return year after year.

As kids, July meant sparklers at dusk, sticky hands from popsicles, and sitting on a blanket waiting for the first firework to crack open the sky. It meant small towns coming alive – parades down Main Street, flags lining the sidewalks, and music drifting from somewhere nearby.

The fireworks themselves felt larger than life. Red bursts, blue flashes, white sparks raining down slowly, mirrored on the water below. For a few minutes, everything stopped as everyone looked up together.

Old Glory is about tradition. About the comfort of seeing familiar colors return every summer.

These earrings are a small tribute to those July nights – to the flags, the fireworks, and the feeling that summer is at its peak.
